The MR8 can also be used as a Midi instrument with some software. It will work with software that has a MIDI input and output like Cubase LE or Cakewalk. There are also many more expensive softwares that allow you to use your MR8 as a MIDI instrument.I've mentioned USB to Firewire interfaces a few times already. With a USB interface you can use it as a MIDI controller as well. This is not possible with an audio interface, so you will be limited to using the MR8 as an audio interface with software such as Cubase. The MR8 has a MIDI out port, which is compatible with the software MIDI Out port on the computer. As far as I know, the MR8 is the only digital audio interface that can be used for USB and MIDI as well.
SoftwareCakewalk 9 and Cubase LE are the main options for recording and mixing music on a computer. Cubase LE is free and can be used on either Windows or Mac. Cakewalk is not free, but is cheaper. These are both very good applications for recording and mixing music. There are also many other recording applications available. For recording there's more software than for mixing music. If you don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a computer and all the software needed to record and mix music, there are also many other software options that will allow you to record and mix your music. It's a good idea to test these out first, before spending a lot of money. Most of these recorders can record two track simultaneously, and keep track of 8 tracks, which is enough for most demo recordings. It's also possible to go for cheaper a 4-track, but for most companies 8-track recorders are the current minimum. It's possible to mix your song on your recorder, but software currently available has far more options usually. Most of the current recorders come with USB interfaces so you can transfer your recorded tracks to your computer and open them in your mixing/recording software to process it further. Audacity is free open source recording and editing software, for demo purposes it's very good.Check out the following portable digital recorders on Amazon:
The Tascam MR8 is targeted at the amateur musician who wants to get started. At around $175 it doesn't have the wow factor of a traditional studio system, but at that price it's a fraction of the cost and more portable. Although there is a lesson in how to use a microphone, this isn't the ideal way to learn, and if you have the money to buy an interface, you can really start to sound professional. The MR8 is aimed at giving you that start, rather than a set of permanent recording studio equipment. It's a solid audio interface, with lots of features and impressive sound quality. The level of quality this interface can produce makes it a very capable choice if you're looking to start recording. For around $180 you should be able to buy a Tascam MR8 that will be good enough for most purposes.
